Liz Greene, in her book "Relating. An Astrological Guide to Living with Others" (1977), wonders about the reasons for the increasing interest in psychological astrology:
astrology belongs to a wider territory, that is, the study of human psyche, and as we expand our understanding and our complexity, we begin also to explore older paths for understanding, related to images and the imagination, while using, at the same time, tools from modern psychology (...) Maybe this happens because, finally, we have started to believe what Jung believed, that is, that there are no new frontiers to explore, other than those of the human soul.
In this context, the author says, psychological astrology
has left behind the ancient habit of divination (what is going to happen to me next year?) in favor of the search for the reasons why we create for ourselves the life that we live, and of how we can express what we have inside in a more creative way. And we do this combining the old astrological symbolism with the new lens that deep psychology applies to the motives and behaviors of human beings. In many ways, this is why we don't need any more to feel that life is something that happens to us, and, instead, we feel that we actually participate in what happens in life. This psychological approach to astrology -or, if you like, this astrological approach to psychology- has already started to find its place in the therapeutic professions as an efficient tool to achieve a quick and deep understanding of the individual's inner world.
Dr. Gerhard Adler, in the preface to the same book, says that
the nature of astrology is rather being an indication that outlines a person's potentials, and that leaves room for the final result to depend upon how the person faces those potentials and uses them.
A person's natal chart is a symbolic representation of the correlation of psychological energies with which she or he faces life. That energy make-up, different for each person, shows how she or he will tend to handle life, as if it were something similar to her or his automatic pilot, or his or her energy DNA. The more aware the person becomes of which ones those energies are, and of how she or he tends to express them in life, the better prepared she or he will be to manage them as consciously as possible, instead of living controlled by them.
